The Witcher 3 Remastered is a free upgrade — and it lands on Switch 2 this September
CD Projekt Red announced The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt Remastered during Gamescom Opening Night Live 2026, and the deal is unusually generous: anyone who already owns the original game on a qualifying platform gets the new version for free.
The Remastered edition launches on September 29 for Nintendo Switch 2, with pre-orders now open on Nintendo's eShop for existing digital owners, according to VGC. Players holding a physical copy of the Switch release will be able to claim the free upgrade when the Remastered version goes live. CD Projekt Red confirmed both paths in a customer-support post on social media, later reported by VGC on August 26.
The studio's own press release, published August 25, describes the Remaster as a free upgrade across all qualifying platforms — not just Nintendo's hardware — and The Witcher's official website echoes that offer for anyone who bought the game on a supported system.
The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, first released in 2015, is an open-world role-playing game following Geralt of Rivia, a monster hunter navigating a war-torn fantasy continent. It has sold over 50 million copies across multiple platforms and is widely regarded as one of the most played RPGs of the past decade. The Remastered version brings updated visuals and performance to newer hardware.
For Nintendo Switch 2 owners specifically, the upgrade path has two doors. Digital buyers can pre-order the Remaster right now through the eShop, locking in the free copy ahead of launch. Physical cartridge owners will need to wait until the September 29 release date to claim their upgrade.
There is a crossover bonus, too. Players who purchase the Remastered version on Battle.net — Blizzard Entertainment's PC storefront — will receive a Geralt of Rivia skin in Diablo 4, Blizzard's action role-playing game, as VGC reports.
For fans, this means revisiting one of the most beloved RPGs of its generation comes at no extra cost — provided you already own a copy. The free-upgrade model is the key detail. Rather than selling a separate "definitive edition" at full price, CD Projekt Red is treating the Remaster as an entitlement tied to the original purchase, regardless of where that purchase was made.
The September 29 release date applies to the Switch 2 version. CD Projekt Red has not yet published a full platform-by-platform launch schedule for the Remaster beyond confirming the free-upgrade policy on qualifying systems.
