Clive Owen Joins Anya Taylor-Joy in Netflix's 'How to Kill Your Family' as Cast Rounds Out
Clive Owen has joined Anya Taylor-Joy in the cast of How to Kill Your Family, Netflix's eight-episode adaptation of Bella Mackie's bestselling novel, with newcomers Orlando Norman and David Shields also boarding the series (Deadline).
Taylor-Joy leads the cast as Grace Bernard, the murderous protagonist of Mackie's book — a forgotten child of Simon Artemis, a merciless billionaire, who sets out to exact revenge after a heartbreaking rejection. The series is created for the screen by Emma Moran, whose credits include Disney+'s Extraordinary, and produced by Sid Gentle, the UK production company behind Killing Eve (Deadline).
Mackie serves as an executive producer alongside Moran, Sally Woodward Gentle, Lizzie Rusbridger, Lee Morris and Taylor-Joy herself, who produces through her LadyKiller label (Deadline).
The project was first announced in August 2024 at the Edinburgh Television Festival, but its path to production was not entirely smooth. Studiocanal, the France-based company that owns the rights to the classic Ealing Studios comedy Kind Hearts and Coronets (1949), filed a copyright lawsuit against Mackie, alleging her novel infringed on the older film's story. That dispute was settled in 2025, clearing the way for the Netflix adaptation to move forward (Deadline).
For a series about a young woman methodically working through her family tree, the legal echo of Kind Hearts and Coronets — itself a comedy about a man murdering his way through a line of relatives — is hard to miss. The settlement details have not been made public.
Netflix also used the same Edinburgh festival slot in 2024 to announce Marbles, a separate family comedy from Friday Night Dinner creator Robert Popper and Big Talk Studios. That series stars Robert Webb, Timothy Spall, Alexandra Roach, Denise Welch and Louise Brealey, and is set to begin filming in autumn 2026 (Deadline).
No premiere date for How to Kill Your Family has been announced. With the cast now rounding out and the legal hurdles behind it, the production is positioned to move into its next phase.
