Chelsea in talks for Atalanta's Honest Ahanor as £34m asking price set

Chelsea are in talks to sign Atalanta defender Honest Ahanor, with the Italian club willing to sell if their €40m (£34.3m) valuation is met (BBC Sport).

Negotiations are advancing rapidly and Chelsea are closing in on that fee, according to reports from late August (Yahoo Sports Canada). The Premier League club have opened preliminary discussions with both Atalanta and Ahanor's representatives (Yahoo Sports).

Ahanor is an 18-year-old Italian defender who mainly plays at left-back. He joined Atalanta from Genoa last summer on a three-year deal for a reported €16m plus €4m in add-ons — roughly £17m in total at today's rates (BBC Sport). That means Atalanta could nearly double their money on a teenager after just one season.

The move did not come out of nowhere. Chelsea first expressed interest in Ahanor in July, when they signed right-back Marco Palestra from the same club (BBC Sport). The Palestra deal opened a line of communication between the two clubs, and Ahanor's name was flagged as a target from the start.

Despite his age, Ahanor already has a full senior season behind him. He made 28 Serie A appearances for Atalanta last season — 35 across all competitions — and established himself as a regular starter (BBC Sport; Metro). He made his Champions League debut in September, a 2-1 win against Club Brugge, and in May he received his first Italy call-up for friendly matches against Luxembourg and Greece (BBC Sport).

For a player who only turned 18 within the last year, that is a steep trajectory. Left-back is a position where Chelsea have rotated options in recent seasons, and a young, Champions League-tested defender with international recognition fits the profile they have pursued under their current recruitment setup.

What makes this stand out is the speed of it all. Ahanor left his boyhood club Genoa just over a year ago. One season later, he is the subject of a £34m approach from a Premier League giant, with negotiations reportedly close to a conclusion. Whether the fee gets agreed before the window shuts — and whether Chelsea consider the asking price worth paying for a teenager with one full campaign to his name — is the question that will define the next few days.

For fans, this is one to watch closely. Ahanor is not a household name yet, but he has the CV of someone who will be soon.
