Como have agreed a deal worth more than £30m to sign Chelsea defender Trevoh Chalobah, ending the 25-year-old's near-20-year association with his boyhood club. Chelsea will receive an initial £25.7m, with a further £5.1m available in add-ons — a package close to their asking price of £30m plus £5m in extras (BBC Sport).

Transfer journalist Fabrizio Romano first reported on 1 August that Como felt an agreement was close on a €30m deal, having already confirmed that Chalobah had agreed personal terms with the Italian club days earlier (Fabrizio Romano, X). The BBC's confirmation on 3 August pushes the move across the line.

Behind the deal is a six-month courtship. Como's manager, Cesc Fabregas — the former Arsenal, Barcelona and Chelsea midfielder now cutting his teeth in management on Lake Como — had been targeting Chalobah for more than half a year (BBC Sport). Interest from Inter Milan existed alongside multiple offers dating back to early June, but Como's persistence won out.

Chalobah joined Chelsea as a child. He came through the academy, debuted for the first team under Thomas Tuchel in 2021, and spent last season on loan at Crystal Palace, where he reminded everyone of his ability to play both centre-back and defensive midfield. A versatile defender comfortable on the ball, he fits the profile Fabregas wants for a Como side that won promotion to Serie A — Italy's top flight — in 2024.

For Chelsea, the sale continues a summer of trimming. The club's strategy under the Clearlake ownership group has been to recycle squad players into transfer funds, and Chalobah, with one year left on his contract and a market value the club were unwilling to let slip, became a logical departure.
