BBC Renews Robot Comedy 'Ann Droid' for Season Two After 7.6 Million-Viewer Launch

The BBC has renewed its comedy series Ann Droid for a second season, handing another run to a show that opened with 7.6 million viewers — one of the broadcaster's biggest launches of the year. Deadline reported the renewal on 27 August 2026.
The series comes from creator and star Diane Morgan, who co-wrote it with Sarah Kendall. Morgan plays a second-hand droid bought for Sue (Sue Johnston) by her son Michael (Paul Ready), so that Michael can focus on repairing his marriage while the robot helps Sue live independently. It is a comedy about self-help robots, family obligation and the awkward gap between what a machine is supposed to do and what it actually does.
Ann Droid is produced by Boffola Pictures and Witchcraft Industries for BBC iPlayer and BBC One, with Shane Allen, Diane Morgan and Pippa Brown serving as executive producers. Brown is also the series producer. The show was commissioned by Emma Lawson, interim director of BBC comedy, with Seb Barwell and Navi Lamba as the BBC's commissioning editors. Deadline
BBC Studios holds a minority investment stake in Boffola Pictures and will handle global sales for Ann Droid, meaning the series could land on platforms and broadcasters outside the UK — a standard arrangement in which the BBC's commercial arm distributes a show it did not fully fund to international buyers.
The renewal does not come as a surprise to those tracking the show's trajectory. RadioTimes reported on 7 August 2026 that a second season was tipped to be in development, citing strong reviews and ratings. RadioTimes What was then rumoured is now confirmed.
For the people who make the show, a renewal means the writers' room reopens and a crew of camera operators, set designers, costume and sound technicians gets back to work. For viewers, it means the story of Sue, Michael and one malfunctioning droid gets a proper second act.
No premiere date for season two has been announced.
