Michael Mann Taps Odessa Young for Charlene in Heat 2, Sets Newcomer Maria Cid for Gabi
Michael Mann has chosen Odessa Young to play Charlene in Heat 2, the role Ashley Judd originated in the 1995 crime epic, Deadline reported on 27 August 2026. Newcomer Maria Cid is Mann's top pick for the part of Gabi. If deals close, both actors join a cast already led by Leonardo DiCaprio, Christian Bale, Adam Driver, Stephen Graham and Jason Clarke.
The Deadline report also clears up a casting rumour that had been circulating for a week. The Playlist reported on 20 August that Inde Navarrette might star as Gabriela, with Young merely "in consideration" for Charlene and Eiza González up for a role called Elisa. FilmStories listed all three names as potentially attached the same day. Production sources now tell Deadline that Navarrette actually auditioned for Gabi — the same part Cid is Mann's first choice for — and that Young was always the first choice for Charlene. González's potential involvement as Elisa has not been updated by the more recent source.
For the cast list, this is where things stand. DiCaprio, Bale, Driver, Graham and Clarke are set. Young and Cid are in negotiations. González's status remains unconfirmed by the production.
Mann will direct from his own screenplay, adapted from the 2022 novel he co-wrote with Meg Gardiner, which hit No. 1 on the New York Times bestseller list. Amazon MGM will release the film in theatres. Jerry Bruckheimer produces through Jerry Bruckheimer Films alongside UA's Scott Stuber and Nick Nesbitt, with Eric Roth and Shane Salerno executive producing. Cameras are expected to roll in November, per FilmStories.
The 2022 novel functions as both prequel and sequel to the original film, tracking Vincent Hanna's Chicago years before the events of Heat, Neil McCauley's earlier criminal life, and Chris Shiherlis's survival after the downtown shootout that closed the 1995 picture. That structure explains the sprawling cast: the story covers ground on both sides of the original timeline.
The 1995 Heat, written and directed by Mann and starring Robert De Niro and Al Pacino, grossed over $187 million at the worldwide box office. It was never a franchise. For thirty-one years it has stood as a single film — a career-defining heist drama that also gave audiences one of cinema's most famous coffee-shop scenes.
Young comes in with serious momentum. She most recently starred opposite Jeremy Allen White in the Bruce Springsteen biopic Springsteen: Deliver Me From Nowhere, and wrapped production on the Netflix crime series Rabbit, Rabbit, which also stars Adam Driver — her second project alongside a future Heat 2 castmate. Cid, by contrast, would be making her feature debut.
For fans of the original, the Charlene role carries particular weight. In the 1995 film, Charlene is the wife of Val Kilmer's Chris Shiherlis, their fractured marriage threaded through the heist plot. The novel expands her storyline considerably. Who plays her matters.
