CBS's Big Brother airs its 1,000th episode on Thursday, 27 August 2026, becoming the first primetime entertainment series in the United States to reach that milestone. The 90-minute special, broadcast live at 8 PM ET on CBS, looks back at memorable moments from the show's 26-year history (TV Insider). Not bad for a format built on strangers locked in a house with cameras rolling around the clock.

The numbers say the show is not limping across the line. As of data through 9 August, Big Brother averaged 5.21 million viewers per episode with a week of multi-platform viewing — up 10 percent year over year and on pace for a second straight season of ratings growth, according to The Hollywood Reporter. Ratings among adults 25-54 grew 21 percent; among adults 18-49, up 15 percent. That 5.21 million figure placed the show among the top 10 programmes of the summer across all platforms, outpacing Love Island USA, which averaged 3.8 million viewers over seven days per Nielsen data.

The scale of viewing becomes stark when measured in minutes. Big Brother was on pace to top 15 billion total minutes of viewing time this season, including its 24/7 live feeds — up from 8.6 billion the previous year. For comparison, Love Island USA's eighth season drew 10.87 billion minutes during its June and July run (The Hollywood Reporter).

CBS has been cross-pollinating its reality lineup. The network said 2.9 million Survivor viewers also watched at least a few minutes of Big Brother this season, up from 2.4 million the prior year. Two-time Survivor player Dee Valladares is part of the current Big Brother cast, a casting choice that appears to have helped bridge the two audiences. Among Survivor 50 viewers who also watch Big Brother, 37 percent have watched more than half of this season's episodes.

The episode count itself is a function of how Big Brother is built. The show airs multiple times each week, and most seasons run between 30 and 40 episodes — a cadence that stacks up faster than weekly scripted series. The Simpsons reached 800 episodes near the end of its 37th season in February. CBS's Survivor, which premiered a few weeks before Big Brother in 2000, had aired 727 episodes through season 50.

The companion show Big Brother Unlocked, airing on Fridays, averaged 3.14 million cross-platform viewers over seven days, up 21 percent year over year. Premiere-week viewership for the main show rose 14 percent in Live+3 — meaning live viewing plus three days of playback — compared with the previous summer, according to Paramount (Paramount).

For a format that started as a social experiment imported from the Netherlands, four digits is a genuine benchmark. Few primetime entertainment shows in any country get close.
