Penn Badgley to Lead Amazon's 'Everyone in My Family Has Killed Someone' Series
Penn Badgley will star in Everyone in My Family Has Killed Someone, a new darkly comedic murder mystery series ordered by Amazon MGM Studios. The show is based on Benjamin Stevenson's bestselling Ernest Cunningham Mysteries book series, with David Hemingson — Oscar-nominated for his The Holdovers script — serving as showrunner and executive producer (Deadline).
Badgley plays Ern Cunningham, a mystery-writing expert who reluctantly attends a family reunion to welcome his brother Michael home from prison — the same brother Ern helped convict. Things escalate when a frozen body appears, a snowstorm traps the family in the mountains of Vermont's Northeast Kingdom, and the deaths begin to mount (Variety).
The novel was first published in Australia by Penguin Random House in 2021, where it became a bestseller, before Mariner Books published it in the US in 2022 as Stevenson's debut. The Ernest Cunningham series has since grown to include Everyone on This Train Is a Suspect, Everyone This Christmas Has a Secret, and Everyone in This Bank Is a Thief, with a fifth book in progress (Variety).
Fifth Season and Made Up Stories are producing and together serve as the studio. The executive producer roster includes Hemingson, Bruna Papandrea, Steve Hutensky, Jeanne Snow, Molly Allen, Badgley himself, and Stevenson. Peter Friedlander, Amazon MGM Studios' Head of Global Television, oversees the project for the platform (Deadline).
This is the book's second shot at a screen adaptation. HBO previously had a limited series version in development in 2022 with the same producers — Made Up Stories and Fifth Season, then known as Endeavor Content — but it did not go forward (Variety).
For Badgley, the role marks a return to murder-adjacent territory. He played serial killer Joe Goldberg across five seasons of You, based on Caroline Kepnes's book series, with the finale airing in 2025. His other credits span Gossip Girl, Easy A, Margin Call, and Kitchen Confidential's sibling series on the writing side — though that last credit belongs to Hemingson, not Badgley (Variety).
Badgley is also keeping his Amazon relationship busy. He stars opposite Meghann Fahy in the forthcoming rom-com film You Deserve Each Other, also produced by Fifth Season and set up at Amazon MGM Studios. So the actor has two projects on the same platform — one dark, one light, both built from books (Variety).
