Hulu Renews Thriller 'Furious' for Season 2 Ahead of First-Season Finale
Hulu has renewed the crime thriller Furious for a second season, giving the show a vote of confidence days before its first-season finale airs on 31 August. The Hollywood Reporter confirmed the renewal on 27 August.
The timing is tight. The penultimate episode of season one aired on 24 August, and the finale is set for 31 August — so fans will know the show survives before they watch the last episode of the current run. The series stars Emmy Rossum as Alice Black, an FBI agent tracking a serial killer played by Lola Petticrew. It comes from 20th Television and Searchlight Television, and was created by Elizabeth Meriwether, who serves as showrunner. Meriwether also created New Girl, The Dropout and Dying for Sex.
The show is loosely based on the 1987 film Black Widow. Rossum executive-produces alongside Meriwether through her Composition 8 banner, with Ronald Bass, Matt Olmstead, Sam Hoffman and Brian Kirk, who also directed the first two episodes. The first-season cast includes Quincy Tyler Bernstine and Scoot McNairy, with recurring roles for Jake Lacy, Rob Delaney, Hope Davis, Rob Yang and Steve Way.
As recently as 24 August, Hulu had not formally announced a renewal, and Meriwether had publicly told TheWrap she hoped the show would earn more seasons. The question is now answered.
Details on season two remain sparse. The next run is likely to follow Rossum's character Alice on a new case, though it is still very early in development.
For viewers, the renewal settles the one question that matters most after a thriller's first season ends: the story continues. The cast and crew of roughly two hundred people who build each episode now have a slot on the schedule, and a writers' room has a reason to open.
