André 3000 and Cathy Moriarty Join Netflix's Live-Action Scooby-Doo: Origins
André 3000 Benjamin and Cathy Moriarty have landed recurring roles in Scooby-Doo: Origins, Netflix's live-action take on the Scooby-Doo franchise, according to Variety. The series is currently filming in Atlanta, Georgia, and is scheduled to premiere in 2027.
Benjamin — half of the hip-hop duo OutKast and an actor whose credits include Jimi: All Is By My Side, Four Brothers, Be Cool, Idlewild, The Shield, Dispatches From Elsewhere, and American Crime — joins a cast that keeps growing. His role, like Moriarty's, has not been disclosed. Moriarty earned an Oscar nomination for her performance as Vickie LaMotta in Martin Scorsese's Raging Bull and has since appeared in films from Kindergarten Cop to Patti Cake$, with recent TV work on Elsbeth, Will Trent, and City on a Hill.
The series centres on Shaggy and Daphne during their final summer at camp, where a lost Great Dane puppy pulls them into a haunting mystery. Netflix's official logline calls it a "modern reimagining" of the cartoon — meaning this is not a direct remake but a new story built from the same characters and premise.
The core Mystery Inc. cast is already set. Maxwell Jenkins plays Fred Jones, Tanner Hagen is Norville "Shaggy" Rogers, Abby Ryder Fortson takes on Velma Dinkley, and Mckenna Grace plays Daphne Blake. Paul Walter Hauser has an undisclosed role. Rounding out the ensemble are Sara Gilbert, Bruce McGill, and Sherilyn Fenn in additional parts.
Behind the camera, Josh Appelbaum and Scott Rosenberg serve as writers and showrunners — the writers who oversee the series day-to-day. They executive produce with André Nemec, Jeff Pinkner, and Adrienne Erickson under their Midnight Radio banner. Greg Berlanti, Sarah Schechter, and Leigh London Redman executive produce through Berlanti Productions. Toby Haynes executive produces and directs the first episode. Warner Bros. Television is the studio.
For a property that has cycled through animated series, live-action films, and direct-to-video releases for more than five decades, Origins narrows the lens to a single summer and a puppy. Whether that premise sustains a full series is a question for 2027. For now, the cast list is doing the talking.
