André 3000 and Cathy Moriarty Join Netflix's Live-Action Scooby-Doo: Origins
André 3000 — the rapper, actor and one half of OutKast — is joining the cast of Netflix's live-action series Scooby-Doo: Origins in a recurring role, according to Deadline. Cathy Moriarty, the Oscar-nominated actress from Raging Bull, is also coming aboard in a recurring capacity. The series is currently filming in Atlanta, Georgia, with a global release scheduled for 2027.
The show is described as a modern reimagining of the Hanna-Barbera cartoon about a group of mystery-solving teenagers and their Great Dane, Scooby-Doo. In this version, Shaggy and Daphne spend their final summer at camp and become entangled in a haunting mystery involving a lonely lost Great Dane puppy that may have witnessed a supernatural murder. It is the second live-action take on the property after the 2002 Scooby-Doo film, which spawned a 2004 sequel.
For André 3000, the casting carries a quiet thread of history. In 2002, his group OutKast — alongside Killer Mike and Sleepy Brown — co-wrote the song "Land of a Million Drums" for the original Scooby-Doo movie. Now, more than two decades later, he steps in front of the camera for the franchise. His acting credits include playing Jimi Hendrix in the 2013 film Jimi: All Is By My Side, which earned him an Independent Spirit Award nomination, as well as roles in Four Brothers, High Life, and White Noise.
Moriarty, whose breakout role came opposite Robert De Niro in Raging Bull, recently appeared in guest-starring turns on the television series Will Trent and Elsbeth.
The leads of Scooby-Doo: Origins were previously announced: Mckenna Grace as Daphne Blake, Tanner Hagen as Shaggy Rogers, Abby Ryder Fortson as Velma Dinkley, and Maxwell Jenkins as Fred Jones. The wider cast includes Paul Walter Hauser, Rusty Schwimmer, Peter Macon, Jona Xiao, Sara Gilbert, Bruce McGill, and others.
Josh Appelbaum and Scott Rosenberg serve as showrunners — the writers who also oversee day-to-day production — as well as executive producers. Greg Berlanti, Sarah Schechter, Leigh London Redman, André Nemec, Jeff Pinkner, Adrienne Erickson, and director Toby Haynes round out the executive producer roster. Berlanti Productions and Warner Bros. Television produce the series, which Haynes also directs by way of the first episode.
The show is slated to reach Netflix subscribers worldwide in 2027. No episode count has been confirmed. Deadline reported both castings on 27 August 2026.
