Warner Music Austria and ADA Partner With Vienna Indie Tonherd for Distribution and Studio Access

Warner Music Austria and ADA Central Europe have signed a distribution and studio partnership with Tonherd, an independent label, publisher, and recording studio based in Vienna, the companies announced on Thursday, August 27 (Warner Music Group newsroom). The deal, also reported by Digital Music News and Music Business Worldwide, gives Tonherd global distribution through Warner's network while opening the indie's studio doors to Warner's local artist roster (Music Business Worldwide; Digital Music News).

Tonherd operates from a 350-square-metre facility in Vienna's 9th district, housing two control rooms. The company describes itself as a full-service, end-to-end music operation — covering songwriting, production, and release. Its three founders split duties with precision: Florian Koch handles recording, mixing, and mastering; Constantin Kaiser oversees releases, distribution, and promotion; and Valentin Bröderbauer manages songwriting, workshops, and organisation.

The studio's production team has been credited on hits for Austrian artists Ina Regen, Josh., and Pizzera & Jaus, and on co-recording work for the Dropkick Murphys album For the People. That track record gives Warner more than a distribution pipeline — it gains a working creative facility with proven output.

Under the partnership, Warner Music Austria and ADA Central Europe — the independent distribution and label services arm of Warner Music Group — will handle global distribution for Tonherd's releases and provide strategic support for its roster across Austria and internationally. In return, Warner's own local artists get direct access to Tonherd's studio space.

Franz Pleterski, General Manager of Warner Music Austria since 2020, is leading the partnership from Warner's side. The stated aim is to accelerate Austrian talent through combined infrastructure: a major label's reach paired with an indie's studio and A&R capacity.

The partnership's first release comes from pop artist Michael Russ. Further releases are slated later this year from artists ams and Fräulein Peter, as well as from Now., the Vienna band formed by all three Tonherd founders.

What stands out here is the two-way structure. Most major-indie deals flow in one direction: the major distributes, the indie creates. This one loops back. Warner artists walk into a working studio in Vienna's 9th district; Tonherd's roster gets Warner's global distribution chain behind it. For a country whose domestic market is modest in size but whose German-language acts regularly cross borders into Germany and Switzerland, that combination of local production and international reach is where the practical value sits.

The deal also reflects a broader pattern among the three major labels — Universal, Sony, and Warner — of building out regional capacity through independents rather than against them. ADA, Warner's independent services division, exists precisely for this kind of arrangement, offering indies the infrastructure of a major without requiring them to sign over their masters.

For Tonherd's founders, the partnership means their releases reach streaming platforms worldwide through Warner's distribution network rather than through a standalone aggregator. For Warner, it means a foothold in a Vienna studio with a documented hit-making history. The first test arrives with Michael Russ's release; the rest of the schedule follows through the year.
