Sonic Can Fire Guns in Fortnite Because He's an Android, Not the Real Hedgehog, Says Sonic Team Boss

Sonic the Hedgehog is blasting away with firearms in Fortnite, and the man overseeing the franchise says there is a perfectly good reason: that is not actually Sonic.

Takashi Iizuka, head of Sonic Team at Sega, explained in an IGN interview published on 3 September 2026 that the Sonic character appearing in Fortnite is an android replica, not the real hedgehog. That distinction matters because, as Iizuka put it, Sonic is a character who will never hold a gun. The android version is a separate entity, so the rule does not apply. (VGC)

Fortnite, the massively popular online game from Epic Games, is currently running a season built around video-game crossovers. Sonic is the first character players unlock, joining a guest roster that includes Crash Bandicoot, Mega Man, Sora, Joker, and Spyro. Shadow and Knuckles are also available as android versions in the Fortnite item shop.

The android explanation carries some history. Iizuka had previously said in interviews that the 2005 game Shadow the Hedgehog — which gave the dark hedgehog firearms — was created precisely because Sonic himself was never supposed to use a gun. Giving Shadow the weapons was the workaround. The Fortnite android is, in a sense, the same logic applied to a crossover.

Epic Games first approached Sega about putting Sonic in Fortnite more than two years before the interview, according to Iizuka. The deal went through, but with guardrails. The android Sonic runs at the same speed as other Fortnite characters rather than at the real Sonic's signature velocity. He can also swim on the surface of water — something the genuine article cannot do.

For fans of the blue blur, the lore distinction is the kind of detail that turns a crossover cameo into a talking point. The hedgehog they grew up with keeps his principles intact, even as a mechanical copy picks up a rifle on his behalf.

Iizuka spoke to IGN through an interpreter. His comments emerged as Sonic Team continues a busy period for the franchise, with the kart racer Sonic Racing CrossWorlds released in September 2025 to positive reviews. Around a decade ago, the series was at a low ebb: according to a GamesRadar report published in June 2026, Sega told the team it was "done with Sonic," and it fell to Iizuka to steer the franchise back on course.
