MoistCr1TiKaL's Comic Godslap Gets Hand-Drawn Animated Film from Powerhouse Animation
Charlie White, the YouTuber and streamer known as MoistCr1TiKaL, is bringing his comic Godslap to the big screen as a hand-drawn animated feature, with production already underway and a 2028 release target. The story follows an 18-year-old farm boy, raised in hiding by a father who calls the boy's extraordinary power a curse, who must decide whether the force in his hands makes him a monster — or the only person able to bring down the corporation that owns the world. Daniel Dominguez, Lyrical's creative director, called bringing the "anime-inflected, hilariously violent" comic to life "a dream come true," according to Deadline.
Kellan Stover is directing. The script was written by Dominguez and Jacob Robinson, head of Lyrical Animation. Powerhouse Animation Studios in Austin, Texas, is handling the 2D hand-drawn animation — the studio best known for the Netflix series Castlevania and its work on projects like Blood of Zeus and Masters of the Universe: Revelation.
White brings an enormous built-in audience to the project. He has more than 25 million followers across platforms, generates roughly 145 million views each month, sees his YouTube videos average 1.8 million views, and draws an average of 15,000 concurrent viewers to his nightly livestreams, per Deadline. The original Godslap comic has sold more than 100,000 copies and is available worldwide.
The film is the latest move by Lyrical Media, a company founded in 2021 with credits including Bruiser, How to Blow Up a Pipeline, Mother, Couch, and The Death of Robin Hood. Its upcoming live-action slate includes Adam Wingard's Onslaught, set for release by A24 on 4 September, and Osgood Perkins' The Young People with Neon.
Lyrical is also building a pipeline of creator-driven animation. Earlier this year at CinemaCon, the company announced a film adaptation of the PlayStation video game Bloodborne, made alongside PlayStation Productions and Seán McLoughlin — better known as the YouTuber Jacksepticeye. Lyrical Media is co-financing that project with Sony Pictures.
What ties both projects together is the throughline from online creator to theatrical screen. White and McLoughlin each command audiences that traditional studios spend tens of millions in marketing to reach. The Godslap film puts that audience behind an original property — not an existing franchise, but a comic that started with one creator and has already found six-figure sales on its own.
For fans of hand-drawn animation, the choice of Powerhouse is significant. The studio has been one of the few consistent producers of 2D animation at scale in the American market, where the technique has been largely displaced by computer-generated work. A full animated feature from that team, backed by a creator with White's reach, is a combination that doesn't come along often.
Production on Godslap is already underway. The film is slated for release in 2028.
