Sarah Catherine Hook to Star in 'Crush,' a Real-Time Python Thriller from 20th Century Studios
Sarah Catherine Hook, fresh off The White Lotus Season 3 and Netflix's People We Meet on Vacation, has landed her first leading role in a feature film. She will headline Crush, a snake-themed survival thriller set up at 20th Century Studios, with production scheduled to begin in Australia this November. Deadline reported the casting on 8 September.
The film is a propulsive, ticking-clock thriller about a woman hiking alone in the Everglades who wakes to find herself trapped in the crushing coils of a massive python. Inspired by true events, the story is designed to unfold primarily in real time, ratcheting up the tension as the protagonist fights to stay alive.
Julius Avery, whose credits include the genre hit Overlord, is set to direct from a script by John Fischer. The screenplay's origin story is its own small drama. Fischer wrote it as a spec script — an original, unsolicited screenplay written on speculation rather than commission — under a pseudonym while serving as an executive vice president at Temple Hill Entertainment. He posted it to the Black List, the annual survey of well-regarded unproduced screenplays in Hollywood. After the script gained traction, Fischer approached his own bosses at Temple Hill to ask whether they wanted to produce it. They did.
Temple Hill is set to produce alongside Scott Glassgold for 12:01 Films, having set the project up at 20th Century Studios following what was described as a heated bidding war. J.R. Young is overseeing the film for the studio. Deadline confirmed all deal structure and production details.
For Hook, the role caps a breakout stretch. She played Piper Ratliff, a college senior, in The White Lotus Season 3, and appeared in Netflix's People We Meet on Vacation, which ranked as the streamer's seventh most-watched film globally during the first half of the year, logging 77.7 million views per Netflix's What We Watched report. She will also star opposite Rhys Ifans and Lily Rabe in Lindsey Ryan's indie film Capsized, which premiered at the Edinburgh Film Festival. Hook is represented by Gersh, Brillstein Entertainment Partners, and attorney Danny Passman.
What makes Crush stand out is the simplicity of its premise paired with the discipline of real-time storytelling. A single character, a single threat, a clock that never stops — it is the kind of high-concept, contained thriller that studios can mount at a controlled budget while still delivering a visceral theatrical experience. For 20th Century Studios, which operates under the Disney umbrella, the project fits a slate strategy that has leaned into genre fare with clear commercial hooks.
No release date has been announced. With cameras rolling in November, a 2027 theatrical window is plausible, though the studio has not confirmed.
