Banderas and Birthistle play estranged parents in TIFF premiere 'Up Against It'
Estranged parents get devastating news about their daughter. That is the premise of Up Against It, which premieres on Sept. 12 at the Toronto International Film Festival, according to Variety.
The film is directed by Trudie Styler. It stars Antonio Banderas as Álvaro and Eva Birthistle as Saffron, a separated couple, with Eden Hamilton as their daughter Rose.
Álvaro and Saffron are told Rose may need a sibling as a potential donor to survive. Much of the story takes place in a hospital, where that dilemma plays out.
Styler workshopped the project before the shoot. That process included shifting the setting from the United States to the United Kingdom. It is her follow-up as a feature director to 2017's Freak Show.
Festival listings describe Up Against It as a wicked comedy built around post-marital acrimony and parental devotion, according to TIFF. The festival programme credits Oscar nominee Banderas as its star.
Both leads have TIFF history. Banderas appeared in Pain and Glory, which screened at the festival in 2019. Birthistle appeared in Imagine Me & You, which screened there in 2005.
The project was previously reported under the title Rose's Baby. Variety reported in November 2025 that the Styler-directed film starring Banderas and Birthistle had sold to several high-profile distributors.
What makes this stand out is the mix. A hospital drama about a sick child. A comedy about divorced parents who cannot agree. For audiences in Toronto, that combination will be the talking point coming out of the premiere.
