Banderas and Birthistle play divorced parents in Toronto sales title Up Against It
A divorced couple consider having another baby to save their dying 14-year-old daughter. That is the premise of Up Against It, the family dramedy directed by Trudie Styler that came to Toronto as a film without a distributor.
The story centres on Rose. Her dormant cancer returns and she needs a stem cell donor to survive, according to Variety. Her parents, bitter since their marriage ended, weigh whether to conceive another child who could provide the match, as reported by Screen Daily.
Antonio Banderas plays Alvaro, the father and a classical musician. Eva Birthistle plays Saffron, the mother and a paralegal. Newcomer Eden Hamilton plays Rose, aged 14.
The wider family is crowded. Ursula Corberó plays Lara, a cellist and Alvaro's girlfriend. Arinze Kene plays Kingsley, a psychiatrist, and Jordan Nash plays Michael, Kingsley's teen son. Forest Whitaker plays Dr Abara, a physician.
The film reached buyers through the Toronto International Film Festival, known as TIFF, where finished films are offered to distributors territory by territory. Up Against It was named by Deadline to its TIFF 2026 Hot List of buzzy movies for sale in Toronto, which described the project as a clash between ex-partners and devotion to a child. Styler was identified in that coverage as a British actress-turned-director.
The title had already surfaced in festival preview coverage. The Hollywood Reporter noted the Banderas and Birthistle starrer among its Toronto 2026 titles in July. Variety then published a review on 13 September 2026.
What makes this stand out is the set-up. Most family dramas — stories mixing serious subjects with lighter comic moments — keep the medical crisis and the broken marriage on separate tracks. Here one forces the other. The parents must cooperate intimately despite their split.
