Banderas comedy Up Against It secures sales deals through TIFF launch

Beta Cinema has unveiled a raft of new territory deals for Up Against It, the family comedy directed by Trudie Styler, Deadline reported on September 14. The announcement came during the film's launch at the Toronto International Film Festival. Deals like these mean a distributor buys the right to show the film in a specific country or region.
The film stars Antonio Banderas and Eva Birthistle as divorced co-parents hit with an indecent proposal, according to Deadline. The script is credited to Camille Griffin and Chloe King. TIFF, which lists Banderas as an Oscar nominee, bills it as a wicked comedy where post-marital acrimony and parental devotion make strange bedfellows, per its festival listing.
It was scheduled for a world premiere as a gala presentation, the festival's showcase slot for high-profile titles, Deadline reported. Its first screening took place on Saturday September 12 at TIFF Lightbox, the film-makers said in a Deadline Studio interview. A further screening on Saturday September 19 will be presented with open captions, according to TIFF.
Banderas and Styler discussed the project at the Deadline Studio at TIFF. They were joined by Eva Birthistle, Mickey Sumner, Selena Tan and Eden Hamilton. Styler appeared on Day 4 of the studio, held at the Bisha Hotel on September 14, 2026, according to Deadline's photo gallery.
Banderas described the story as a process that is "sometimes painful, sometimes funny, like life" and called it "a movie about life" in the interview. That balance sits at the centre of the sales pitch. Beta Cinema describes the film as fast-paced, sharp-tongued and unexpectedly tender, per its line-up page.
For audiences new to festivals, this is the normal chain. Premiere. Press. Sales. Then the wait for release dates in each territory.
