Overwatch reworks Sombra as Support and gives Roadhog new scrap power

Sombra is changing sides. The stealth hacker will move from Damage, the heroes built to finish off opponents, to Support, the heroes built to heal and protect teammates, as part of two major reworks announced during the BlizzCon 2026 opening ceremony, GameSpot. Roadhog, the bulky Tank known for his chain hook, will get the other overhaul.
That is a big switch. Sombra has spent her whole Overwatch life as a Damage pick centred on disruption. Her signature Hack ability is gone in the new design. In its place comes Hotfix, which still hacks health packs and enemy deployables such as turrets and traps, but now also heals allies.
Her damage tool is changing too. Virus, the short-range shot that poisoned enemies over time, has been replaced by Cyberspace. It is a projectile with two jobs. It heals teammates on contact and weakens enemies it hits.
The rest of her kit is being retuned to fit. All of her Perks, the mid-match upgrades players choose to shape a hero, have been adjusted except for CTRL ALT ESC, GameSpot. She will also gain Support passives, the built-in bonuses that help healers survive and recover health.
Roadhog's rework is more physical. His Scrap Gun, a short-range shotgun, loses its alternate fire, the longer-range scrap volley. Blizzard is removing it outright.
In its place comes Trash Compactor. The new ability absorbs incoming enemy projectiles and packs them into an explosive ball of scrap that Roadhog can throw back. It turns defence into attack in one motion.
Both reworks are planned for Season 5, according to Blizzard. The company also confirmed an announced launch date of 5 October for Doctrine, the game's 54th hero.
For players, this means two familiar faces will soon feel unfamiliar. Sombra mains will need to think like healers. Roadhog players will need to time blocks instead of spraying at range. Season 5 will tell how quickly they adapt.
