Blizzard reveals Diablo 5 for 2029, ends Diablo 4 expansions
Blizzard has revealed Diablo 5, planned for release in 2029, and confirmed there will be no more paid expansions for Diablo 4.
The announcements were made at the BlizzCon 2026 opening ceremonies, where the company laid out what it called Diablo's next era Blizzard. Diablo 5 is set a century after Diablo 4 in a changed Sanctuary, the dark fantasy world where the series takes place Eurogamer.
Diablo 4 launched in 2023 as an action role-playing game, built for repeated runs through dungeons for loot. Blizzard has supported it with two kinds of updates: expansions, large paid add-ons with new story and areas, and seasons, free timed updates that reset progress and add fresh quests and rewards.
There will be no third expansion. Diablo game director Brent Gibson said the team has finished the Story of Hatred with the Lord of Hatred expansion and its villain Mephisto, and is now moving toward telling the Story of Terror. Future story content for Diablo 4 will be delivered through seasons in the lead-up to Diablo 5 PC Gamer.
One of those seasons is almost here. Season of Hell's Legacy has a launch date of 15 September 2026. It celebrates the 30th anniversary of the Diablo franchise and brings back Deckard Cain, the scholar character who has guided players since the first game. The season includes a quest that pits players against Diablo, Baal and Mephisto, the three Prime Evils of the series.
The same launch date, 15 September 2026, applies to the Diablo 4 port for Switch 2, Nintendo's current console. That version includes all previously released content, which covers the base game and its two expansions.
Looking further ahead, Blizzard announced the Amazon as a returning playable class for Diablo 4, scheduled for the first half of 2027. The Amazon hails from the island of Skovos and has not appeared as a playable class since Diablo 2, released in 2000. It will be sold as a class pack, a smaller paid bundle that adds one character type rather than a full expansion Polygon.
For fans, this means a clear split. Diablo 4 keeps running with seasonal stories and a classic class return, while the main series moves toward a new numbered game three years out.
