Jeff Goldblum Opens SNL UK Season 2 With Jazz Number

Jeff Goldblum opened the second season of Saturday Night Live U.K. from behind a piano.

The actor hosted the first episode of the new season, which premiered on September 12 on Sky, with Irish singer CMAT as the musical guest, according to Variety and Deadline. The British version follows the same live sketch format as the long-running American show: a celebrity host, a musical act and a company of comic performers.

Goldblum skipped a straight speech. He sat at the piano and played a jazzy number about spending time in London, Variety reported.

He pitched himself to the local crowd in food terms. He sang that he hoped to be the audience's "precise cup of tea" and that they would like him more than Nando's or Marmite.

Then came the nerves joke. "Even if I still bomb, I will keep calm and carry on because I'm hosting from London tonight," he sang.

Goldblum nodded to his own film work next. A quick costume change brought a green-tinted nod to his role as the Wizard in Wicked, as he sang: "Despite a few wicked flaws, I am the Wizard of Oz!"

CMAT joined him mid-song. The musical guest, confirmed for the premiere by The Hollywood Reporter, walked on holding cue cards reading "Life Finds a Way." The line is Goldblum's famous quote as Dr. Ian Malcolm in Jurassic Park.

He closed big. "Life finds a way, when you're live on Saturday," he sang, before finishing with: "Like Sainsbury's Local, we're all feeling vocal. And I'm hosting right here, in London tonight!"

What makes this stand out is how local the jokes went. Nando's, Marmite, Sainsbury's Local, keep calm and carry on. For viewers, this means the U.K. edition is leaning into its home crowd as its second season begins.
