Peacock cancels Miami crime drama M.I.A. after one season
Peacock has cancelled M.I.A., its Miami-set crime drama, after one season.
Deadline reported the decision on 13 September. The news closes the story after nine episodes.
The series premiered on 7 May, with all nine hour-long episodes released at once for streaming. One week later, NBC gave the show a slot on broadcast television with a special airing on 14 May. That gave streaming viewers and broadcast viewers two different doors into the same launch.
Set and shot in Miami, the story centred on Etta Tiger Jonze, played by Shannon Gisela. Etta is a young woman hunting a dozen cartel members, as described by The Hollywood Reporter. Her fight follows a threat to her family’s drug-running business, according to NBCUniversal.
The series was created, written and executive-produced by Bill Dubuque. Dubuque is best known as the co-creator of Ozark. On M.I.A., Karen Campbell served as showrunner, the writer-producer who leads day-to-day creative work, and as writer and executive producer.
Alethea Jones directed the first two episodes and served as an executive producer. Directors in that opening block shape the visual template for the season. Her producer credit placed her among the senior creative team.
Gisela led a large ensemble cast. The line-up included Cary Elwes, Danay Garcia, Brittany Adebumola and Dylan Jackson. Alberto Guerra, Maurice Compte, Gerardo Celasco and Marta Milans also starred.
Behind the camera, MRC was the studio for the series. Paramount Global Content Distribution was the distributor, the company that sells and delivers the finished show to buyers and platforms.
Peacock had backed the project early and in full. It gave M.I.A. a straight-to-series order, meaning no pilot is shot first, in 2024, as reported by Deadline. NBCUniversal then put the South Florida-set, female-led crime thriller in the Peacock slate it showcased at its 2025 Upfront, the annual presentation to advertisers.
For fans, this means Etta’s story stops at nine episodes. There will be no second season to continue it.
