Diablo 4 marks 30 years with Cain return, Prime Evil rematches and Switch 2 debut

Deckard Cain is back. The Prime Evils are back. And Diablo 4 is coming to a Nintendo console for the first time.

Blizzard detailed Season of Hell's Legacy during the BlizzCon 2026 opening ceremony, and it goes live on 15 September at 5:30pm UK time, according to Eurogamer. The season is Season 15 for Diablo 4, a live-service game that adds themed, time-limited updates alongside its main story. Blizzard calls this one the centrepiece of its 30th anniversary celebration for Diablo.

The hook is nostalgia with teeth. Cain's spirit returns to warn players that echoes of Diablo, Baal and Mephisto, the three original Prime Evils, have resurfaced. The dead are rising from Pandemonium, the afterlife realm of the series.

Each demon waits in a place tied to Diablo history. Diablo is in Tristram Cathedral, Baal is at Arreat Summit, and Mephisto is in the Durance of Hate. Beating one grants a Soul Splinter, an item that lets a player borrow that demon's power.

There is a catch. The same Splinter makes the holder more vulnerable to the demon it came from. Power up, but pick your fights.

Season of Hell's Legacy also adds Waking Nightmares, special encounters that recreate specific moments from Diablo's past. For loot hunters, there are nine new Legacy Uniques, top-tier named items with fixed powers. They will stay in the game permanently after the season ends. One of them is the Stone of Jordan, a ring that long-time players will remember, as reported by Blizzard.

For fans, this means a short wait and a busy day. Diablo 4 debuts on Nintendo Switch 2 on the same date, 15 September.

The Switch 2 release is the Age of Hatred Collection. It bundles the Diablo 4 base game with its two expansions, Vessel of Hatred and Lord of Hatred. Nintendo's store now lists the collection for Switch 2. The version supports cross-play, letting people on different systems play together, and cross-progression, which carries a save and unlocks across systems.

Looking further ahead, Blizzard confirmed the Amazon will join Diablo 4 in the first half of 2027. The Amazon, a returning class from Diablo 2, fights with bow and javelin. Blizzard lists four builds: Champion, Skirmisher, Ranger and Commander.
