Blizzard confirms Protoss fights in new StarCraft shooter
Protoss fans, don't worry. You will get to fight them.
That assurance came from Dan Hay, general manager and creative director on Blizzard's new StarCraft shooter, in an interview with GameSpot at BlizzCon 2026 GameSpot. The conversation centred on how the three factions will interact in a shooter format. Hay confirmed players will face the Protoss — the advanced alien faction — at some point in the game.
The question arose because the reveal trailer keeps its attention elsewhere. It centres on the Terrans, the series' human faction, in a confrontation with the Zerg, the swarm-like alien faction. The Protoss are effectively absent from that first look.
Hay said the absence is only surface deep. He pointed to a moment when the thing opens and the horn sounds, with Protoss architecture hidden in the background. It is easy to miss on a first watch.
The interview also locked in two basic facts about how the game will play. It will use a third-person perspective, with the camera placed behind the player character rather than showing the world through their eyes. It will have a single-player focus, built around solo play rather than required multiplayer. That core experience is designed for one player alone.
The wider details were set out by Blizzard on 12 September 2026. The company announced STARCRAFT, described as an original open-world shooter, during the BlizzCon 2026 Opening Ceremony Blizzard. An open-world shooter offers a large, freely explorable map rather than a single linear path. The game is set in the Koprulu Sector, the distant region of space where StarCraft stories take place, with a launch window of Spring 2030.
Hay is leading the project. He is a veteran of the Far Cry series Wccftech.
For fans, this means the three-way balance that defined StarCraft remains intact. Terrans, Zerg and Protoss will all have a part to play, even if the first trailer only showed two of them. It also suggests one faction is being held back for a later reveal.
The wait will be long. The 2030 date is more than three years from September 2026. Blizzard has not yet announced platforms, pricing or whether other modes will follow the single-player core.
