Blizzard announces StarCraft as an open-world shooter for 2030

Blizzard has announced a new StarCraft game built as an open-world shooter.
The company revealed the project during the opening ceremony at BlizzCon, under the working title StarCraft, with a scheduled release in 2030. GameSpot
The reveal came with a cinematic trailer, a pre-made film that sets the mood rather than showing live play. It centres on troops of the Terran Dominion, the human military faction of the series, trying to hold position as a huge wave of Zerg pushes forward. The Zerg are the other side of that fight, a swarm-like alien force that wins through numbers and speed.
That format is a clear change of direction. StarCraft made its name as a real-time-strategy game, a style where players view the battle from above, gather resources, build bases and direct armies moment by moment. The new project is described instead as an open-world shooter, a style where one character explores a large, continuous map and combat happens from behind the gun. In short, the camera moves from the commander's map to the soldier's boots.
Blizzard is presenting it simply as StarCraft for now, with no subtitle announced. If the plan holds, it will be the first original StarCraft game since StarCraft II: Legacy of the Void, which was released in 2015. That leaves a 15-year gap between original entries, a stretch that covers a full hardware cycle and the rise of subscription services and free-to-play live-service games, sold and updated in seasons after launch.
News of a shooter in this universe did not come from nowhere. Bloomberg reporter Jason Schreier first reported on a StarCraft shooter in development at Blizzard, according to a preview of BlizzCon 2026. Windows Central Separate job advertisements pointed the same way, seeking staff for what Blizzard described as a AAA open-world shooter, industry shorthand for a big-budget project with a large team. One listing round in April raised the possibility of a StarCraft link, which later coverage tied more firmly to the project. TweakTown
For fans, this means a favourite universe seen from a new angle. No command view. No base building on display. There is still a long road ahead, with the scheduled release four years out, and detail so far is limited to the title, the genre and that opening trailer.
