Blizzard's return to StarCraft will be an open-world shooter called StarCraft, due for release in 2030 as a one-off boxed game rather than a live-service title.

The details came from Dan Hay, the project's lead, during a Korean media roundtable at BlizzCon 2026. He described the envisioned structure as a "box product", meaning a complete game bought once rather than a live-service game, sold and updated in seasons after launch. The game currently being built is not a seasonal game, he said, Eurogamer reported.

It will be narrative-driven. Players create a character, give them a name and follow that character's story. That story has a beginning, a middle and a definitive end.

The structure will be familiar to open-world fans. Expect main missions that push the central plot forward, side quests off the main path, and character progression, the steady unlocking of abilities and gear as you play.

Hay oversaw Ubisoft's Far Cry series for 10 years, from Far Cry 3 to Far Cry 6. His link to the project was first flagged when Bloomberg reported he was working on an in-development StarCraft shooter, a report noted by VGC.

The title is simply StarCraft, according to Polygon. Blizzard announced it alongside Diablo V, Bloomberg reported.

What makes this stand out is the format. StarCraft began as a strategy series built for long-term competitive play. A closed story with a named hero you make yourself points in a different direction. For fans, this means a clear finish line, not an endless grind.
