Lanterns Episode 5 Reveals Zoe Macon as the Last Manhunter
The woman they trusted was the one they were hunting.
In HBO's Lanterns Episode 5, Hal Jordan and John Stewart realise that Zoe Macon is the lone alien they have been searching for in Rushville, Nebraska. Jordan is played by Kyle Chandler, Stewart is played by Aaron Pierre, and Zoe is played by Poorna Jagannathan, as reported by Deadline.
The episode is called "Lights Out". It was released on 13 September 2026 on HBO and HBO Max, airing at 9 p.m. ET / 6 p.m. PT, according to Forbes. It is the fifth instalment of an eight-episode first season, which puts the story past the halfway point.
The twist lands as the search narrows to one small town. Hal and John piece together that Zoe, who has been living among the people of Rushville, is not human at all. She is the figure they came to find.
She is then revealed as the last living Manhunter. That identity makes her the sole survivor of her kind and the focus of the Lanterns' investigation in Nebraska.
Until that moment she had presented as an ordinary local resident. The reveal moves her from the edge of the mystery to its centre, and reframes earlier scenes in Rushville.
Jagannathan said the turn surprised her too. She told Deadline she did not anticipate Zoe's secret and learned of it when reading the script with everyone else. She did not see it coming.
The confrontation is short and costly. Zoe is killed during Episode 5. Much of Rushville is largely levelled in the same fight, leaving the town in ruins.
The wider ensemble includes Kelly Macdonald as Sheriff Kerry Kane. Kane heads local law enforcement in Rushville as Hal and John close in on their target.
Timing details were set out before transmission. Forbes published the release date, channel and start time on 13 September, with Deadline publishing its explainer on the Zoe reveal on 14 September.
For fans, this means a clean break for the run ahead. With Zoe dead and Rushville destroyed, the central hunt that drove the first five episodes is finished. Three episodes remain in the eight-episode season, and they start from new ground.
