Stephen Root wins first Emmy for Widow's Bay and sets age record
Stephen Root has won the Emmy for supporting actor in a comedy series, the category that honours co-stars, for playing Wyck in Apple TV's "Widow's Bay." It was his first win. He also became the oldest winner in the category, breaking the previous record by two years, as reported by Variety.
The previous oldest winner was Henry Winkler, who won at 72 for playing acting teacher Gene Cousineau in "Barry." That was Winkler's first Emmy and came 42 years after his first nomination for "Happy Days." Root has history with "Barry" too. He was nominated in 2019 for playing Monroe Fuches in the series.
Root beat six other nominees. They were Colman Domingo for "The Four Seasons," Paul W. Downs for "Hacks," Harrison Ford for "Shrinking," Nick Offerman for "Margo's Got Money Troubles," Michael Urie for "Shrinking" and Tyler James Williams for "Abbott Elementary."
"Widow's Bay" is a horror-comedy on Apple TV. It was nominated for Outstanding Comedy Series, the night's top comedy prize, among 19 nominations in total, according to the Emmys site. The series premiered in April and had been renewed for a second season by June.
The show had already won eight Emmys at the Creative Arts ceremonies, the earlier Emmys night for craft, guest and technical awards. The acting wins on the main night took its total to ten. Kate O'Flynn won supporting actress in a comedy series for "Widow's Bay." It was her first Emmy on her first nomination.
Matthew Rhys was also nominated for lead actor for "Widow's Bay." Dale Dickey received a nomination for the series as well, as part of Apple's record haul of 89 Emmy nominations, announced by Apple. "Widow's Bay" is produced by Apple Studios / Chum Films.
What makes this stand out is the long road. Two career nominations. One first win. For fans, this means more. A second season is already ordered, so Wyck's story is not finished.
