Widow's Bay Sets Emmy Record With 14 Comedy Wins
Widow's Bay has set a new Emmy record with 14 wins in a single season, the most ever for a comedy.
The Apple TV horror-comedy passed the mark of 13 wins set by The Studio a year ago, according to Variety. It did it in two parts. Eight trophies came at the Creative Arts ceremonies, which honour craft and guest acting. Six more followed on Monday's primetime telecast.
The headline prize was outstanding comedy series. Widow's Bay beat Abbott Elementary, The Bear, Hacks, Margo's Got Money Troubles, Nobody Wants This, Only Murders in the Building and Shrinking.
The acting wins spread across the cast. Matthew Rhys took lead comedy actor. Kate O'Flynn won supporting comedy actress and Stephen Root won supporting comedy actor. Betty Gilpin had already won guest comedy actress at the Creative Arts Emmys for playing Sarah Westcott Warren, according to the Television Academy.
Behind the camera, the series also won directing for Hiro Murai and writing for creator Katie Dippold for the premiere episode. That is a clean sweep of the major comedy categories decided on Monday night: series, acting, directing and writing.
The other eight wins recognised the crew. They covered production design, casting, cinematography, music composition, music supervision, sound editing and sound mixing, plus Gilpin's guest award. The Creative Arts tally of eight left Widow's Bay ahead of every other programme, according to Deadline.
The haul came from 19 nominations. The Pitt led all shows this year with 25 nominations, followed by Hacks, Widow's Bay and Beef. For Apple, the year brought a record 89 Emmy nominations across its slate, the company said in a July statement.
What makes this stand out is the genre. Widow's Bay competes as a comedy but plays as a horror story too. That blend is often hard to place at awards time. Voters placed it firmly in comedy, then rewarded it in large numbers.
For fans, this means the full team behind the season has been recognised. Fourteen wins from 19 nominations leaves little of the show untouched, from its leads to its sound mixers.
