Widow's Bay Wins Best Comedy with Record 14 Emmys in Debut Year

The acting prizes piled up fast. Matthew Rhys won Best Actor in a Comedy Series for Widow's Bay. Kate O'Fkynn won Best Supporting Actress and Stephen Root won Best Supporting Actor. Hiro Murai won for directing a comedy episode and Dippold won for writing. Betty Gilpin added a guest actress win for a shorter appearance.
The run built over two nights of awards. Widow's Bay had already banked eight wins before the main ceremony, according to PBS NewsHour. It then closed the main show with the Best Comedy prize. Rhys left with a pair of Emmys, including his lead actor award, according to The New York Times.
The result tops last year's comedy benchmark. The Studio won Best Comedy Series in 2025 and collected 13 trophies. It had entered that year with 23 nominations, tying the prior record for a comedy.
Other shows shared the rest of the 78th Emmys. Spider-Noir won five awards, while The Pitt and Pluribus each won four, according to the Television Academy. Rob Reiner won Outstanding Guest Actor in a Comedy Series, an award for a brief role.
For Apple, it capped a record haul of nominations. The company entered this year's Emmys with 89 nominations, a company record it announced in July, according to Apple.
