Widow's Bay sweeps the Emmys with record 14 wins for a comedy
A freshman comedy about a cursed New England town just rewrote the Emmy record book.
Widow's Bay, the Apple TV comedy series, won Outstanding Comedy Series at the 78th Primetime Emmy Awards at the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles on September 14, 2026. It finished with 14 wins in a single season, a new high for a comedy, according to AP.
Six of those wins came on the main telecast, the most for any single programme that night, according to the Television Academy. The other eight had been presented at the earlier Creative Arts ceremony, which covers technical and guest categories. That earlier tally had been reported ahead of the main night by AP. Those technical wins were handed out over Labor Day weekend, according to the New York Times.
The awards were decided on only part of the season. Widow's Bay won on the basis of its first seven episodes, which debuted on April 29, according to Deadline. The final three episodes missed the May 31 eligibility cut-off, meaning the last date a programme can qualify for that year's race, and were not in contention.
The acting prizes tell the story of the sweep. Matthew Rhys won best actor in a comedy for Widow's Bay, and the show also took Best Comedy Series and three acting awards in total on the main night, according to AP. Kate O'Flynn won Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series for the show, according to the Television Academy. Sally Field collected her fourth Emmy at the September 14 ceremony, according to Deadline. Behind the camera, Hiro Murai won Outstanding Directing for a Comedy Series for Widow's Bay, according to the Television Academy. The show had arrived with 19 nominations.
What makes this stand out is how fast the comedy record has kept falling. Hacks entered this year as the reigning Best Comedy Series winner, according to Al Jazeera, with 24 nominations in its fifth and final season. That broke the comedy nominations record. The old shared mark of 23 was held by The Bear and The Studio.
The wins record has moved almost every year. The Bear set it with 10 wins in 2023, then broke its own mark with 11 the next year. Hacks took the Best Comedy Series prize that year instead of The Bear. The Studio then set the then-record with 12 Emmys in 2025. All figures are per Deadline. Since 2018, Ted Lasso is the only comedy to win back-to-back Emmys, for its first two seasons in 2021 and 2022.
Drama had a repeat winner too. The Pitt won Drama Series for the second consecutive year in 2026. It had picked up four Emmys at the early ceremony. Pluribus won six Emmys overall for its first season, including Emmys for creator Vince Gilligan and star Rhea Seehorn. Seehorn won best actress in a drama for Pluribus. Tom Pelphrey won an Emmy for Task. In comedy, Jean Smart won her fifth Best Actress in a Comedy Emmy.
For fans, this means a first-season show now holds the comedy benchmark. The winners were chosen by more than 24,000 Television Academy voters, according to Deadline. And with three episodes of Widow's Bay still to qualify next time, its story at the Emmys is not finished.
