BritBox brings Tommy and Tuppence to modern London
BritBox launches Agatha Christie's Tommy & Tuppence on 15 September in the United States and Canada. The six-part series moves Tommy and Tuppence to modern-day London. It is the first contemporary English-language screen version of the characters, according to Variety.
Josh Dylan plays Tommy, a crime novelist. Antonia Thomas plays Tuppence, an aspiring actress back in Britain after a stint in Los Angeles. Imelda Staunton plays Tommy's Aunt Ada, a retired private investigator who acts as narrator and guide.
Tommy is meticulous and charming, a writer who has lost his passion. That shifts when Tuppence re-enters his life. The two fall in love, fall out of it and tumble back in while solving mysteries, as seen in the trailer shared exclusively by Variety. Together, they set up an agency called Blunt's Brilliant Detectives.
Each episode brings a fresh case. Episode three centres on the theft of a rare pearl necklace. On the police side sit Detective Sergeant Draper, played by Callie Cooke, and Detective Inspector Merriot, played by Chizzy Akudolu.
The show is a contemporary adaptation, meaning Christie’s novels and short stories about the couple are reset in the present day. BritBox, the streamer owned by BBC Studios, released a teaser trailer ahead of launch and put out first-look images of Thomas, Dylan and Staunton. The 15 September date was announced through BritBox.
What to expect on pacing comes from early reaction. Variety’s review says the series takes a moment to get its bearings and does not find its footing until the end of Episode 2, then blossoms into an engaging mystery drama. Six episodes. One new agency. Two partners figuring it out as they go.
