6.7 million viewers watched the 78th Emmy Awards on NBC on Monday night, according to Nielsen.

The ceremony was hosted by Law & Order: Special Victims Unit star Mariska Hargitay. The figure covers live viewing of the NBC telecast, as reported by Variety.

That total is 9% lower than last year. The 2025 ceremony, which aired on a Sunday on CBS, drew 7.4 million viewers, the show's best performance since 2021.

Mondays are tough. The night favoured no one, with the Emmys airing against an NFL game between the Kansas City Chiefs and the Denver Broncos. Viewed on those terms, the 2026 result was up 10% on NBC's last Monday outing in 2022, which drew 5.9 million viewers, and well clear of the Fox-televised Monday ceremony in 2024, which drew 4.4 million.

NBC said the broadcast still ranked as the most-watched non-sports, non-news Monday telecast of 2026 so far. That applies both overall and among adults aged 18-49, the age group advertisers watch most closely.

Online viewing told a stronger story. NBCUniversal reported 133 million social views for the show across Facebook, Instagram, X and YouTube, up 90% from 2025.

The night's leading contenders were familiar to regular viewers. The Pitt entered the night with 25 nominations, ahead of the final season of Hacks with 24, according to Fox News. NBC's live winners coverage listed early victories for The Traitors, The Muppet Show and Love on the Spectrum, per NBC.

What makes this stand out is the split screen. TV viewing slipped year on year, as a Sunday move to a Monday plus football would predict. Social viewing jumped sharply at the same time, which suggests a smaller live audience still generated a larger conversation around it.
