Spring Awakening Revival Sets Its Young Leads for Off-Broadway
The fall revival of Spring Awakening has its four leads.
Ashlyn Maddox will play Wendla, Tyler Jordan Wesley will play Melchior, Ryo Kamibayashi will play Moritz and Amalia Yoo will play Ilse, Variety reported on Sept. 16.
The production starts previews Nov. 27 and opens Dec. 17 at Studio Seaview. Previews are the first paid performances before the official opening, when the creative team can still make changes. The revival is Off-Broadway, meaning it will play a smaller New York house than a Broadway theater.
Danya Taymor is directing. Taymor won a Tony Award for directing The Outsiders on Broadway, and here she leads a company made up largely of young performers.
The rest of the company includes Jack Bateman as Georg, Jada Simone Clark as Thea, Leif Coomer as Ernst, Nando Morland as Otto, Antonio Porciello as Hanschen, Khadija Sankoh as Martha and Grace Slear as Anna.
Two of them came through an open call. The producers saw 2,532 actors in July, and Bateman and Porciello were cast from that search.
The musical is by Steven Sater and Duncan Sheik. Celia Rowlson-Hall is choreographing the revival, with music supervision by Or Matias, Variety reported.
For theatergoers, this means the dates are set and tickets can move. Previews begin the week of Thanksgiving. Opening night locks the show in mid-December.
