How Warming Unraveled a Himalayan Slope: The Science Behind the Nepal-Tibet Flood

Scientists said on September 17, 2026, that climate change was a core contributing factor in the August glacial collapse that flooded parts of Nepal and Tibet. The conclusion comes from World Weather Attribution, a research network that studies extreme events. Al Jazeera
The report, titled “Rapid Warming in the Himalaya Exacerbates Geohazard Cascades Beyond Adaptation Limits”, called the disaster a “compound crisis.” That means it was shaped by long-term warming, shrinking glaciers, thawing permafrost and unstable geology, not by one storm alone. Permafrost is ground that normally stays frozen year-round and helps hold mountain slopes in place.
On August 26, a section of rock and glacier broke away from Langtang Lirung mountain. It sent water, ice and debris downstream. The flood traveled 200 km to Devghat in under seven hours. River flow at Devghat more than doubled to about 5,850 cubic metres per second. World Weather Attribution
July and August 2026 were the warmest months locally recorded, about 5 degrees Celsius higher than normal, according to the study. Heavy snowfall in late 2025 added to meltwater before the collapse. A magnitude 7.8 earthquake in Nepal in 2015 may have further weakened the slope, though its precise role remains uncertain, according to the report.
Early assessments pointed to a more immediate trigger. On August 27, scientists described a Himalayan flood along the border between Nepal and China's Tibet as having killed 165 people. At the time, it was suspected that an earthquake had struck the region and triggered an ice-rock avalanche on the Lhende Khola river in Nepal.
Report co-author Walter Immerzeel, a mountain hydrologist at Utrecht University, said the region was undergoing “fundamental, irreversible shifts,” with glacier retreat and permafrost loss undermining mountain stability. Friederike Otto, professor of climate science at Imperial College London, said “there is no doubt climate change is one of the drivers and needs to be discussed in the context of loss and damage.” Loss and damage is the term used in climate talks for harms that vulnerable countries cannot avoid or adapt to.
The toll is still rising. Nepal's disaster authority revised the number of people considered missing to 6,150 after data collection and verification in affected districts. The number of bodies retrieved in Nepal stands at 1,403, of which 105 have been identified, according to the disaster agency. In China, the toll is 43 dead and 519 missing. Most studies are done rapidly after extreme events, including while events are still happening. Nepal has been studied before. From 26-28 September 2024, extremely heavy rainfall hit Nepal, especially Kathmandu and nearby regions, and a later study found the rainfall behind those lethal floods was made about 10% more intense by climate change.
The broader context here is diplomatic as much as scientific. The Langtang case points away from single-hazard forecasting and toward cascade analysis, where warming, ice loss and old seismic damage interact. It also tests the loss and damage system. Kathmandu is linking attribution science directly to a quantified reconstruction need and a General Assembly platform, a sequence other high-mountain states will watch. Whether coordination with Beijing on cross-border warning and sediment risk follows, and how donors answer a climate-justice request, will shape the next phase more than the attribution finding alone.
