A glacier collapse on August 26, 2026, near the Langtang Lirung peak sent a catastrophic flood through Tibet and parts of Nepal, leaving 903 people dead and 4,247 missing as of August 31, according to Nepali authorities Reuters.

Scientists believe a section of the glacier at roughly 5,200 metres elevation broke away and fell about 1,200 metres, gathering rock and debris before slamming into the Lende River. The resulting flood surge swept south through Nepal's Rasuwa, Nuwakot, and Dhading districts, devastating communities and infrastructure along river valleys that host a dense cluster of hydropower projects — dams and power plants that generate electricity from flowing water Al Jazeera.

The single most urgent operational challenge is the fate of 933 workers stationed at a series of hydropower projects along the swollen rivers, classified as missing by Nepal's National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority (NDRRMA). Several hundred are believed to be trapped in hydropower tunnels — long underground passages that carry water to turbines — that were swamped by debris. The Langtang Lirung collapse follows the same class of events known as Glacial Lake Outburst Floods (GLOFs) and ice-rock avalanches that have struck the region with increasing frequency, though the verified death toll here exceeds what prior incidents in the upper Trishuli and Bhote Koshi basins have produced. A GLOF occurs when a glacial lake's natural dam fails, releasing a massive volume of water downstream. The 933 workers trapped across multiple hydropower projects simultaneously illustrate the compounding risk of concentrating critical infrastructure and its workforce in narrow river valleys downstream of retreating glaciers.

The tunnel entrapments also pose an unprecedented technical rescue challenge. Hydropower headrace and surge tunnels — the passages that channel water through mountain rock to power turbines — can extend for kilometres at depths that make surface drilling slow and imprecise. With debris-choked intakes and potentially compromised tunnel linings, the window for extracting trapped workers narrows with each passing day, which is why India's specialized tunnel rescue officers and China's large-scale mobilization were accepted despite Kathmandu's initial hesitation about foreign involvement.

The decision to accept forensic DNA identification teams from India is a sobering signal: authorities are preparing for a substantial portion of the 4,247 missing to be recovered as fatalities, many potentially unrecoverable from collapsed or debris-filled tunnels. The NDRRMA has documented 51 disaster-related incidents across Nepal in connection with the floods, including multiple secondary events beyond the primary Lende River surge NDRRMA.

Five days after the glacier collapse, the operation has transitioned from rescue to a hybrid of rescue and recovery, with the fate of those inside the tunnels determining whether the final toll stabilizes near current figures or rises substantially higher.
