Czechia Brings 75 Authors, 100 Events to Frankfurt as 2026 Guest of Honour
Czechia takes centre stage at Frankfurter Buchmesse next month with as many as 100 events, 10 exhibitions and 75 authors.
The Guest of Honour appearance, meaning one country holds the fair's central pavilion and programme, runs with the fair itself in Frankfurt am Main from 7 to 11 October 2026. It is the 78th edition of the fair. Czechia's theme is 'Czechia: A Country on the Coast' Frankfurter Buchmesse.
The plan is large by design. The Czech team aimed to present 75 authors, nominated by the project's editorial board, a group brought together to select the line-up. Authors Radka Denemarková, Jáchym Topol and Jaroslav Rudiš are among those named for the programme Publishing Perspectives.
The operation is led by Martin Krafl, head coordinator at the Czech Literary Center and director of the Guest of Honour programme. The Center is a division of the Moravian Library in Brno and part of RECIT, a European network of literary translation and promotion bodies.
On the pavilion stages, Czech authors will talk about their works and meet the audience. The fair said the literary and cultural programme was presented in June. The dates are set.
New writing sits at the heart of the list. Three winners of the Novel for Frankfurt competition from the last two years will travel to Frankfurt as part of the programme. The competition drew 294 manuscripts. Excerpts from the three winning books will be translated into German, English, French and Spanish.
That translation push matters. Sample translations, meaning short excerpts prepared for publishers, scouts and editors, are how rights deals often start. Frankfurt, London and Bologna are the main fairs where those translation rights are bought and sold.
The scale is familiar to fairgoers. The 2025 fair drew 4,350 exhibitors, 238,000 visitors, 3,500 events and 7,800 media representatives. Organisers say the 2026 edition will introduce a new hall concept.
For visitors, the hours are specific. Trade visitors, meaning publishing professionals with trade passes, can attend from 9:00 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. on 7 to 10 October and from 9:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. on 11 October. The general public can attend from 11:00 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. on 9 October, and from 9:00 a.m. on 10 and 11 October, closing at 6:30 p.m. and 5:30 p.m. respectively.
For readers, this means shelf time for Czech books in more languages. The Guest of Honour role puts authors, translators and publishers in the same rooms for five days. What travels next depends on those meetings.
