Valor Mortis priced at US$40 for crowded October launch

Valor Mortis will sell for US$40 because its makers say this autumn is too crowded to charge more.
Developer One More Level and publisher Lyrical Games confirmed the price and a launch date of 13 October for PC, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S, according to GameSpot. The official Valor Mortis account lists the price as US$39.99. That is cheap by 2026 standards.
The date is a short delay. Valor Mortis was originally scheduled to launch on 24 September. The team moved it to October without framing the shift as trouble, only extra time before a busy release window.
The game is a first-person soulslike, a tough action game built around difficult combat and learning from defeat, set during the Napoleonic Wars. Players control William, a revived soldier of the Grande Armée, the French field army of that era.
Price is the story here. Lyrical Games boss Blake Rochkind said the US$40 tag is meant to make Valor Mortis an “and game”. His point was simple: players can buy it alongside a full-priced release rather than choosing between the two.
The studio put it more bluntly. The team said it priced the game at US$40 in part because “this fall is stacked”, with heavy demands on players’ time and money. Autumn is traditionally the busiest sales period for new releases.
What buyers get for that price is a 20-hour story, as stated by One More Level and Lyrical Games. A Deluxe Edition adds unique weapon skins and a major story expansion due in 2027. The studio also said cosmetic packs, optional visual items that do not change how the game plays, will arrive in the next few months.
For fans, this means a lower entry point plus another route in. Valor Mortis will be available day one via Xbox Game Pass, the subscription service that offers a library of games for a monthly fee.
One More Level, the Cracow-based studio behind Ghostrunner, is also taking the game on the road. Its next public stop is Tokyo Game Show 2026.
