Wyatt Russell joins John Carroll Lynch's comedy Happy as Roger
Wyatt Russell has joined the cast of Happy, the upcoming comedy from director John Carroll Lynch. He will play a character named Roger, Variety reported.
The story follows Myles, played by Asa Butterfield, into a spectacularly dysfunctional first meeting with his girlfriend's family, according to The Hollywood Reporter. It is billed as what may be the worst first meeting with a partner's parents ever committed to film. That awkward introduction becomes a test of how far Myles will go for the woman he loves.
The details are chaotic. The synopsis points to a shotgun fired at a birthday cake, a voyeuristic mother, a seductive sister and a disarmingly decent ex-boyfriend. Add excessive alcohol and a lack of boundaries.
Russell joins an ensemble that already includes Butterfield alongside Mark Strong, Kyra Sedgwick, Brittany O'Grady and Patti Harrison, Variety reported. Butterfield's Myles sits at the centre of the mayhem.
Behind the camera, Happy was written by Ira Steven Behr, whose credits include Outlander. It is the second feature directed by Lynch, the actor turned director whose debut Lucky starred Harry Dean Stanton and David Lynch and was released in 2017.
The film is produced by Claude Dal Farra and Brian Keady of BCDF Pictures alongside Richard Kahan and Behr. BCDF previously produced To Leslie and The Hating Game. Embankment is handling global sales, the business of licensing the film to distributors country by country. Principal photography, the main shoot, is set to begin in March 2027 in the United States.
Russell arrives with a busy slate. He appeared opposite Emily Blunt in Steven Spielberg's Disclosure Day and appeared in Apple and Legendary's MonsterVerse series Monarch: Legacy of Monsters. He reprised his Marvel role as John Walker / U.S. Agent in Thunderbolts*, and is set to play the character again in Avengers: Doomsday.
He is currently filming Birdwatcher, a Monarch spinoff centred on Lee Shaw, Variety reported.
What makes this stand out is the set-up. Almost everyone knows the nerves of meeting a partner's parents. Happy takes that dinner and lets it spiral, with Myles caught between trying to impress and trying to survive.
