Jeff Daniels to Lead Scottish Wedding Comedy The Reception

Jeff Daniels will lead The Reception, a comedy about a chaotic Scottish wedding to be directed by Trudie Styler, Deadline reported on 13 September 2026. The casting news broke midway through this year’s Toronto International Film Festival.

The story starts at the altar. Felix abandons Victoria on their wedding day. The wedding party decides to hold the reception anyway, and the day unravels from there. It is a wedding with no wedding, but all the guests still in the room.

The project is in pre-production, the phase where cast, crew and locations are locked before cameras roll. Filming is set to begin next month in a castle near Loch Ness, outside Inverness in Scotland. One grand building. One stranded crowd. Plenty of confined space for tempers to fray.

Styler is directing and producing. She is producing alongside Celine Rattray and Piers Tempest for Maven Screen Media and Tempo Productions, the two companies behind the film. The Reception will be Styler’s fifth project as a director, following a run that has moved between acting, producing and directing.

The business around the film is already moving. Beta Cinema is launching international sales at the TIFF market, where rights to show the film in cinemas are sold country by country to local distributors. CAA Media Finance is representing North American rights, the separate licence covering the United States and Canada, which is domestic in industry terms.

That sales launch lands in a crowded week. The 2026 Toronto International Film Festival, the 51st edition, runs from 10 to 20 September in Downtown Toronto. Its sales market, a new launch edition, runs from 10 to 16 September and gives sellers a fixed place to meet buyers. More than 130 buyers from 49 countries have confirmed attendance, according to ScreenDaily.

Styler has a second reason to be in town. Her film Up Against It is premiering at TIFF in the same week as the announcement, putting her in Toronto as both a premiering film-maker and a director preparing her next shoot.

For audiences, the next steps are straightforward. Finish casting. Shoot in Scotland. Then close distribution deals that decide where and when the film reaches cinemas.
