Travis Kelce says Taylor Swift is now 'fully engulfed' in football
Travis Kelce says his wife Taylor Swift has learned football fast enough to explain it to other people.
He praised her knowledge on a bonus episode of New Heights, the podcast he hosts with his brother Jason Kelce, posted on 18 September. Actor Tom Cruise appeared as special guest, days after sitting beside Swift at a Kansas City Chiefs game, according to Billboard.
“She’s on it now,” Travis said. “She fully engulfed in it.” He said Swift now calls out penalties without prompting, including a defensive hold, when a defender illegally grabs an opponent, and encroachment, when a defender crosses the line before the ball is snapped.
He contrasted that with her first games. Early in their relationship, Swift thought he and Jason were “basically out there boxing each other on the field.” Jason recalled sitting with her at a Chiefs game in that period and fielding basic questions about what was happening on the field.
Swift has spoken before about asking Travis what it felt like to face Jason when the Chiefs played the Philadelphia Eagles in the Super Bowl of 2023, a rare final between two brothers on opposing teams. On the latest episode, the brothers added a family detail: Jason’s young daughters first addressed the singer by her full name, “Taylor Swift,” rather than just Taylor.
The conversation followed the Chiefs’ opener against the Denver Broncos on 14 September at Arrowhead Stadium, the team’s home ground in Kansas City. It was the teams’ first game of the new season, and Kelce’s first competitive game since his July wedding to Swift. Swift watched from a box suite next to Cruise and the two were seen in long conversation during the win, as reported by Page Six.
Kelce marked the occasion with a 59-yard reception, a single catch and run covering that distance. Broadcaster Pat McAfee, who was watching the game coverage, said Swift was “all in” on her husband’s performance from the suite, according to People.
Cruise said Swift did most of the teaching that afternoon. He said she was “schooling” him on football and described her and Kelce as “a beautiful couple.” In a separate interview, he called Swift a “genius” when asked what they had discussed while watching together.
For regular viewers, the exchange fills in a small gap. Swift has become a familiar presence at Chiefs games over the past three seasons, but the rules of American football are new to many watching her watch the sport. On this evidence, she no longer needs a guide.
