Former PlayStation bosses restage game-sharing joke with no disc to share
Shuhei Yoshida and Adam Boyes have restaged their famous PlayStation game-sharing joke — this time with empty hands.
The two former Sony executives reunited at Tokyo Game Show 2026, the annual games showcase in Japan, for a callback to a video first released 13 years ago, according to Insider Gaming. Then, they passed a game disc from one to the other. Now, there was nothing to pass.
Yoshida shared the moment in a post on X published at 4:02 AM on September 18, 2026. The text read simply “Met with a best friend :D”. It tagged Boyes at @amboyes and @PlayStation_jp, and carried the hashtag #TGS2026.
The original clip was 22 seconds long. It showed Yoshida handing a boxed PlayStation 4 game to Boyes and explaining how lending worked on the console, according to GameSpot. The punchline was its simplicity. Just hand it over.
That simplicity was the point. Sony was drawing a contrast with the Xbox One’s initially planned system of frequent DRM checks, digital rights management tests that verify who owns a game and how it can be used. Physical discs could be lent, sold on or given away with no extra step.
Both men have since left Sony. Boyes departed in 2016. Yoshida left in 2025 after leading Sony’s Independent Developer Initiative, the unit that works with smaller studios.
The empty-handed update has its own context. Sony announced several months before the 2026 show that it would cease production of game discs. No discs, no handover.
What makes this stand out is how little needed to change. Same people. Same joke. Only the object in the middle is gone. For fans who remember the first video, that absence does the talking.
