Netflix Cancels Sweet Magnolias, Orders New Drama
Netflix has cancelled Sweet Magnolias after five seasons and ordered a new drama from the same creator.
The replacement is Ladies of the House, from executive producer and showrunner Sheryl J. Anderson, with Sweet Magnolias lead JoAnna Garcia Swisher attached to executive produce and eyed to star, as reported by Deadline.
Sweet Magnolias starred Garcia Swisher, Brooke Elliott and Heather Headley as Maddie, Dana Sue and Helen. Set in the small Southern town of Serenity, it followed three lifelong friends who call themselves the Sweet Magnolias as they juggle relationships, family and careers over regular margaritas. Anderson, credited as the show's creator, adapted the series from the novels by Sherryl Woods. It ran for 50 episodes across five seasons.
Netflix had renewed the series for its fifth season with Anderson returning as showrunner, the person in day-to-day charge of a series. That final season debuted on 11 June. It drew 2.8 million views in its opening week to place No. 4 on Netflix's Weekly Top 10 for English series, down 30% on the premiere-week audience for Season 4, according to figures in the same Deadline report.
Viewing then rose to 3.5 million in its first full week. The season left the Top 10 after three weeks. The previous season had released all 10 episodes on 6 February 2025, as reported by Deadline.
By June 2026, Netflix had not renewed the show for a sixth season and had not commissioned a writers' room, the team that plots the next run of episodes. The cancellation confirms the story ends at five. Serenity is closed.
Ladies of the House is loosely based on Lauren Edmonson's novel. It centres on a wife and two adult daughters forced to confront challenges around their winery business, extended family and personal lives after the charismatic winery owner dies unexpectedly. Anderson will serve as showrunner. She will executive produce alongside Garcia Swisher and Kate Gordon under their Rolling Clover banner, with Black Label Media.
For fans, this means one ending and a possible reunion. The Serenity story is finished, but its creator and one of its leads are staying at Netflix together. No premiere date and no further casting for Ladies of the House has been announced.
