Sweet Magnolias Cancelled After Five Seasons as Netflix Lines Up Ladies of the House
Netflix has cancelled Sweet Magnolias after five seasons.
Deadline first reported the decision, according to The Hollywood Reporter. The call came three months after the fifth season premiered on 11 June, as announced by Netflix Tudum.
The drama is based on novels by Sherryl Woods. It stars JoAnna Garcia Swisher as Maddie, Brooke Elliott as Dana Sue and Heather Headley as Helen. Netflix lists it as a TV-14 drama with five seasons, all streaming only on Netflix.
Season five took the characters to Manhattan. It spent three weeks in Netflix’s worldwide top 10 for English-language series. It also spent four weeks in Nielsen’s U.S. charts, which track viewing on television sets in America.
Work is already lining up for the team behind it. Creator Sheryl J. Anderson and star Garcia Swisher are executive producing a new Netflix series, Ladies of the House.
Anderson will serve as showrunner, the person who runs the writers’ room and day-to-day production. Anderson, Garcia Swisher and Kate Gordon will executive produce through Rolling Clover and Black Label Media. Garcia Swisher may also take an on-screen role.
Ladies of the House is based on a novel by Lauren Edmondson. It centres on a winery-owning family. A wife and two adult daughters face business and family pressure after the owner’s unexpected death.
For fans, this means one story closes while another starts with familiar names attached. Sweet Magnolias ends at five seasons. Its showrunner and leading actor stay at Netflix for what comes next.
