Berlin Elects a New State Parliament in a Double Election Day

Berlin elects its 20th Abgeordnetenhaus, the state parliament, on September 20, 2026, in a double state-election day that also includes Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. Parties campaigned through September 19. Berlin's election administration lists publication of results on September 20 and 21.

The Berlin vote covers both the Abgeordnetenhaus and the Bezirksverordnetenversammlungen, the elected assemblies for the capital's 12 boroughs. Responsibility for preparation and conduct lies with Berlin's Wahlorgane, the election bodies. According to the city administration, those bodies are charged with the proper preparation and conduct of all political elections in Berlin and with determining and establishing the official result in the state, as well as administering Volksbegehren and Volksentscheide, petition-led referendums at state level Berlin.de.

The September 20 vote is formally the election for the 20th Abgeordnetenhaus von Berlin Berlin Administration. District contests run concurrently. That makes Berlin's election night a two-layer count: a Land parliament, meaning a state parliament, and local mandates decided by the same voters under different counting procedures.

Polling ahead of the Berlin vote put the Alternative for Germany (AfD) at 20%, more than double its 9.1% result in the previous Berlin election Le Monde. The final campaign days also included a viral video claiming to show AfD postal ballots being destroyed ahead of the Berlin vote DW. The claim circulated widely. Its substance has not been established in the verified record.

The Berlin and Mecklenburg-Vorpommern votes follow the Saxony-Anhalt state election on September 6, 2026, in which the AfD surged into first place according to exit polls, surveys taken with voters after they vote Reuters. The party won the Saxony-Anhalt vote but lacks a majority, more than half the seats, in the state legislature Reuters. A plurality without a majority is like finishing first in a race but still needing partners to form a team, so government formation turns to coalition negotiations among other parties unless that arithmetic changes. Chancellor Friedrich Merz said the Saxony-Anhalt result "shakes his party to its foundations" Reuters. Merz faces mounting criticism ahead of the September 20 regional elections Le Monde. The AfD, for its part, views Saxony-Anhalt as a stepping stone to Germany's 2029 national elections Reuters. Campaigning in the two September 20 states wrapped up on September 19 DW.

The broader context here is sequencing and leverage. Saxony-Anhalt tested AfD strength in an eastern Land, or state. Berlin tests it in a city-state with a different coalition landscape and a fragmented district map. Mecklenburg-Vorpommern tests it in parallel. For practitioners, the question is less the headline share than what follows: whether pluralities translate into governing power, how other parties manage coalition math when the winner lacks a majority, and how Berlin's result, due in part on election night and in part on September 21, shapes positioning in Berlin and in the Bund, the federal level, well before 2029. Disinformation dynamics belong in that assessment too. A viral ballot allegation does not need to be verified to affect trust in postal voting, and election administrators will be judged on speed and transparency of the count as much as on the count itself.
