Apple's M6 Mac mini: What's New, What It Costs, and Who It's For

Apple's 2026 Mac mini is the first Mac to ship with the M6 chip, starting at $899. The range pairs a base M6 model with a higher-end M5 Pro model that replaces the old M4 Pro version. Prices are up from the $599 launch price of the M4 Mac mini. The Verge
The entry M6 model comes with 16GB of unified memory, which is memory shared between the processor and graphics, and 256GB of storage. That starting point matters for developers and IT departments that need a known baseline for coding work, software containers, and Apple Intelligence features. Apple also offers a $799 education price in the U.S. Apple
The $300 jump needs context. Apple stopped selling the $599 256GB M4 mini because of supply limits. Since May, the cheapest M4 mini was the 512GB model at $799. Compared on equal storage, the new generation costs $100 more.
The review machines show the spread. The Verge tested a $1,299 M6 mini with a 12-core CPU, 12-core GPU, 24GB of unified memory, 512GB storage, and 2.5Gb Ethernet. The other unit was a $2,899 M5 Pro mini with an 18-core CPU, 20-core GPU, 48GB of memory, 1TB SSD, and 10Gb Ethernet. The first fits as a general desktop and light build machine. The second fits heavier work that uses many cores and lots of memory at once.
On the chip itself, M6 moves the base design from 10 CPU cores and 10 graphics cores in M4 to 12 and 12. Apple lists the CPU as 2 super cores, 4 performance cores, and 6 efficiency cores. M6 is Apple's first chip built on a 2 nm process, which means smaller transistors, and it includes a Dual 16-core Neural Engine, the part of the chip built for AI tasks. Apple Apple claims 40 percent faster CPU speed, 2x faster graphics, and up to 4x faster AI speed. The AI number connects most closely to local jobs like transcription, summaries, image creation, and coding help in Xcode. Storage speed also doubles compared with the M4 and M4 Pro minis, which should cut install times and loading times for large projects.
The body and ports are largely unchanged from the 2024 redesign that shrank the mini to 0.82 liters. The headphone jack is still on the front, handy for test benches and audio checks. The M5 Pro mini adds Thunderbolt 5 ports, which allow faster external drives, more displays, and larger docking setups for people who use the mini as their main computer. Wired networking is still tiered, with 2.5Gb Ethernet on the tested M6 unit and 10Gb Ethernet on the tested M5 Pro unit.
Production is also moving. The Mac mini will be built at a new factory at Apple's Houston site starting later this year. Apple said in February the expansion will double the campus footprint. Apple Final assembly in the U.S. can make shipping and compliance simpler for buyers, even though chips still come from a global supply chain. The mini arrives as part of a wider desktop update that adds an M5 Max option to the Mac Studio. Bloomberg That keeps the usual split. The mini covers single-user coding, testing servers, edge servers, and home labs, while the Studio handles larger graphics and memory needs. The pricing argument is narrower than it looks. The $599 mini was unusual for Apple, and its exit in May had already reset expectations. The Verge says the mini is still the best value in the Mac range despite the higher price. For teams buying many machines, the decision will rest more on memory prices, SSD wear under heavy use, and reuse of Thunderbolt 5 accessories than on the base price alone.
In my view, the CPU layout is worth watching. Two super cores above the performance and efficiency cores suggest quick, time-sensitive tasks get priority, while background jobs like compiling code, indexing files, and preparing data for machine learning run on the other cores. If the system software manages that mix well, the machine should feel more responsive under load without using much more power. That kind of daily difference rarely shows up in a single test score.
From watching my own two kids grow up through each Apple chip change, the pattern has held. They never asked about nanometers or core counts. They noticed when a video export finished sooner and the machine stayed quiet. The M6 mini fits that history. Smaller transistors, a larger Neural Engine, faster storage, and Thunderbolt 5 on the Pro model reduce small delays in regular technical work. The long-term direction is hopeful, with more local computing per watt, per dollar, and per liter of desk space, plus room for on-device AI models that once needed the cloud.
