Lord of the Rings parody Fly, You Fools! sets London premiere and Birmingham dates

A Lord of the Rings parody that fits the first film into 60 minutes will have its London premiere this winter.
Fly, You Fools! is a live, shot-for-shot spoof of The Fellowship of the Ring. Shot-for-shot means it follows the story of the first film scene by scene, played for laughs. It turns a 178-minute film into a 60-minute stage show.
The production plays Southwark Playhouse Borough from 25 November 2026 to 16 January 2027. Opening night in London is 27 November. It then goes to Birmingham Rep for five performances from 20 to 23 January, as reported by WhatsOnStage. The London run covers seven weeks across Christmas and New Year.
Four performers play every hobbit, wizard, elf and orc. They build Middle-earth with physical comedy, mime and live sound effects. Four actors do it all. There is no film set and no recorded score to lean on.
That sound is made in the room. It includes Foley, the craft of creating footsteps, sword clashes and weather noises live in performance. It also includes a cappella singing, meaning voices alone stand in for the orchestra.
The show comes from Recent Cutbacks, the comedy team behind Hold On To Your Butts. That earlier hit gave Jurassic Park the same fast, small-cast parody treatment. Fly, You Fools! is directed by Kristin McCarthy Parker, who is director, producer and co-founder of Recent Cutbacks. It was originally performed by Nick Abeel, Kyle Schaefer and Matt Zambrano.
For fans, this means the quest from the Shire to Mordor told at speed, with quick changes and a lot asked of the imagination. What makes this stand out is the scale gap. A fellowship, a war and a volcano, handled by four people in an hour.
The London dates fall in the 25th anniversary year of The Fellowship of the Ring film. That anniversary has brought renewed attention to the screen trilogy released from 2001. The stage parody sits inside that year, not as a revival but as a send-up.
The London and Birmingham dates are produced by Peter Huntley and Callum Runciman for Smart Entertainment, Heather Shields for Rigor + Ruckus and Recent Cutbacks, in association with 2nd Row Comedy. Foley is by Blair Busbee, with a cappella arrangements by Kelsey Didion. Lighting design is by James Appleby. Key art is by Ligature Creative.
Before England, the company returned to the Edinburgh Fringe in August. The show was listed for Pleasance Courtyard, Beyond from 5 to 31 August, according to BroadwayWorld. That summer run preceded the winter dates in London and Birmingham.
