J.K. Simmons will star opposite Will Poulter in Beat the Reaper, the Apple TV drama adapted from Josh Bazell's novel.

Simmons has boarded the project as a series regular, meaning a central cast member appearing across the series. He joins Poulter in the core ensemble viewers will follow week to week. Deadline reported the casting.

Poulter plays Dr. Peter Brown, an intern at Boston's worst hospital with a past he prefers to keep hidden. Simmons plays Dr. Friendly, an incompetent surgeon who works in the same hospital as Brown. One is just starting his medical career. The other holds a senior post.

The series takes its story and title from Bazell's novel of the same name. That book centres on Brown and the double life that follows him into the wards. Adaptations of this kind keep characters and premise from the book while rebuilding them for television.

Behind the camera, Sam Catlin is showrunner, meaning the writer who leads creative decisions day to day, and executive producer. Tim Van Patten will direct the pilot, meaning the first episode that sets the look and tone of a series, and serve as executive producer alongside Catlin. The showrunner oversees scripts and editing. The pilot director shapes how that world looks on screen.

Beat the Reaper hails from Apple Studios and New Regency, the two companies producing the show. For New Regency, Arnon Milchan, Yariv Milchan, Natalie Lehmann and Laura Delahaye will serve as executive producers, a credit that denotes senior oversight of creative and business decisions. Rachel Toffler joins that team as co-executive producer, according to Deadline.

For viewers, this means the central pairing is now in place as the pilot moves forward. A pilot is the test phase where casting, scripts and direction come together before a full series order. That is the stage where a broadcaster decides whether to order more episodes. With both Brown and Friendly now cast, the hospital at the centre of the story has its two key doctors.
