Cretton signs Sony producing deal after Spider-Man record run

Destin Daniel Cretton has signed a three-year overall deal with Sony Pictures to develop films to produce, The Hollywood Reporter reported on 22 September 2026.

An overall deal gives a studio first call on new projects from a producer. Under this one, Cretton will develop films to produce through his organisation, Hisako Films, alongside company president Jeyun Munford. The deal does not cover his directing services.

That distinction matters. Cretton remains free to direct elsewhere. His next directing effort will be a live-action Naruto adaptation for Lionsgate, which is due to shoot early next year.

The Sony agreement follows Cretton’s work as director of Spider-Man: Brand New Day. The numbers are large. The film has grossed more than US$2.452 billion worldwide, according to the same report.

It opened in theatres on 31 July, after a world premiere on 27 July. In domestic cinemas, meaning the United States and Canada, it took US$360 million in its opening weekend and then stayed at No. 1 for six consecutive weeks. It passed US$1 billion worldwide in six days.

The run also rewrote the record books. Spider-Man: Brand New Day is the No. 1 film of all time at the domestic box office, passing Star Wars: The Force Awakens, The Hollywood Reporter reported on 16 September 2026. It had earlier set the highest-grossing first week ever at the domestic box office. On Rotten Tomatoes it holds a 90 percent critics score and a 97 percent audience score.

Cretton’s earlier credits include directing and co-writing Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings. He also co-created, directed and executive-produced the Marvel series Wonder Man, starring Yahya Abdul-Mateen II and Ben Kingsley. Abdul-Mateen II earned an Emmy nomination for the programme. Cretton is represented by WME and Goodman Genow.

For fans, this means two tracks to watch. Sony gets Cretton the producer for three years. Lionsgate gets Cretton the director first, on Naruto.
