A seven-year-old Marvel film is about to beat every new release at the cinema.

Disney is putting Avengers: Endgame back into theatres as Avengers: Endgame Encore from 25 September 2026, ahead of Avengers: Doomsday opening in December, according to projections reported by Variety. The re-release is tracking to collect $25 million to $28 million over its opening weekend in the domestic market, the United States and Canada. That is enough for first place.

Endgame first opened in 2019 and has grossed $2.799 billion worldwide, which makes it the second-biggest film in box office history, Variety reported. This version is not a straight repeat. It will include brand-new footage, as announced in April, and an exclusive sneak peek at Doomsday, as announced in July. Tickets for the run beginning 25 September are already on sale, according to Marvel.

The closest challenger is Resident Evil. Zach Cregger's reboot of the horror series is targeting $24 million to $26 million in its second weekend in the United States and Canada, Variety reported. It led the chart the previous weekend with $61 million, a franchise-best debut. A drop of that size is normal. Second weekends almost always fall, because fans who rush out first are gone.

Three new films open behind them. Primetime and The Heart of the Beast are each projected to debut to $17 million to $20 million in the United States and Canada. Forgotten Island is aiming for $15 million to $17 million. The budgets tell different stories. Primetime cost $15 million to produce. The Heart of the Beast cost $82 million. Forgotten Island cost $80 million.

What makes this stand out is the calendar. Doomsday arrives in December and pre-sales have already crossed $50 million, Variety reported. Marvel has also started an official podcast, Countdown to Avengers: Doomsday.

For fans, this means a short bridge between the two Avengers chapters. Encore offers the old story on the big screen again, with a first look at the next one attached.
